French classes
Level 0 - Complete Beginner A0
This level is perfect if you’re just starting French—or if you’ve learned a few words here and there (Duolingo, school, holidays) but still freeze when someone speaks to you.
You might feel like:
- I know some words, but I can’t say a full sentence.
- I learnt back in school, but I can only remember “comment t’appelles-tu ?.”
This is exactly where our beginner level 0 French group classes can help.
What you’ll learn over 8 weeks:
- Introducing yourself and others
- Talking about likes/dislikes
- Asking and answering simple questions
- Using core verbs (être, avoir, aller, faire)
- Ordering food, booking a table, and asking for help
Level 1 – Confident Beginners A1
Approximate level: A1
Already know a bit of French and ready to take it further?
This level is for students who feel comfortable with basic questions and answers. You should already be able to introduce yourself, talk about your daily life, and use common French verbs like aller, faire, vouloir, pouvoir, and devoir—even if you’re still making mistakes (that’s totally normal!).
If you can say things like:
• “Quand est-ce que tu vas en France ?”
• “Je ne travaille pas demain, alors je vais au cinéma.”
• “Qu’est-ce que tu fais aujourd’hui ?”
…then you’re in the right place.
In this class, you’ll build on your existing skills and get more comfortable forming sentences, asking questions, and chatting about everyday life.
💡 Not sure if Level 0 or Level 1 is right for you?
If you’re already building short sentences and can ask basic questions without too much fear, go for Level 1. If that still feels out of reach, Level 0 is a better starting point—and we’ll help you get here.
✅ Available in Edinburgh, Dundee, and elsewhere in Scotland through an online class.
Level 2 – Advanced Beginners A1+
Approximate level: A1+ to A2
Looking to move beyond the basics? Our Level 2 French classes are perfect for advanced beginners who can already hold simple conversations and want to speak with more ease and fluency.
At this stage, you should feel familiar with the present tense, past tense (passé composé), and near future (futur proche)—even if they’re not perfect yet. You might still pause a lot or make mistakes when you speak (don’t worry, that’s normal!), but you’re ready to practise more and grow your confidence.
If you can say things like:
• “Le week-end dernier, je suis allée au restaurant avec mes amis. J’étais heureux. Et toi, qu’est-ce que tu as fait ?”
• “Demain, je vais partir en France et je vais retourner au travail la semaine prochaine. Et toi, qu’est-ce que tu vas faire demain ?”
…then this level is a great fit for you.
In this small group course, we’ll focus on real-life French words that people actually use.
💡 Not sure if you should choose Level 1 or Level 2?
If you’ve already started using the past tense in conversation—even just a little—Level 2 will help you build on it and move past beginner small talk. If you’re not quite there yet, Level 1 will give you a strong foundation to get started.
✅ Available in Edinburgh and online classes.
Level 3 – Improvers A2
Approximate level: A2
If you’re no longer afraid to speak and are ready to take your French further, our Level 3 group classes are for you.
At this level, you’ve already worked with the present, past (passé composé), and future tenses, and you’ve probably had a first look at the imparfait and conditionnel, even if they’re still a bit “hésitant”. You might still search for words or make mistakes—and that’s completely okay—but you’re ready to speak more French and make progress.
In this group, we start having richer discussions:
🗣️ Talking about memories, plans, hopes, preferences, and experiences.
🧠 Building more vocabulary, using more complex structures, and expressing ideas
😊 All in a relaxed, supportive environment where it’s okay to get things wrong while you’re learning.
💡 Not sure if you’re Level 2 or Level 3?
If you can already talk a bit about things like:
• what you did last weekend
• what you’re doing tomorrow
• what you would like to do next year
—even if it’s not perfect—then this level is probably right for you. If that still feels like a big leap, Level 2 will help you get there step by step.
Whether you’re joining us in Edinburgh, Dundee, or through our online French group classes across Scotland, you’ll find a welcoming space to speak more freely, build real confidence in French, and mostly HAVE FUN!
Intermediate B1
Approximate level: B1
Attention: This class is mostly run in French!
At this level, you’re moving toward more natural and spontaneous conversations in French. You’ve covered most of the essential tenses and you can use them in real situations, even if you’re still polishing things up.
You probably understand more than you can say (that’s totally normal!), and while you can follow a conversation and express yourself, you sometimes hesitate or search for the right word. That’s exactly what we work on in this class.
At this level, we’ll help you:
🗣️ Speak more fluidly in longer conversations
🧠 Build your vocabulary around real-life topics
🔄 Fix those pesky common mistakes that keep popping up
🎧 Sharpen your listening and feel more confident understanding native speakers
We speak mostly in French in this group, but it’s relaxed and supportive. We slow down when needed, explain tricky grammar in simple ways (sometimes in English!), and always focus on everyday, natural French—the kind you actually hear in France.
Whether you’re taking in-person French classes in Edinburgh or Dundee and online, this level will give you the tools and confidence to speak French more freely—and have fun doing it.
Advanced - B2+
Approximate level: B2 and beyond
Attention: This class is run in French!
This is a conversation-based French class for students who are already comfortable speaking French and want to take things further—towards sounding more natural, more fluent, and more French.
At this stage, you’re not afraid to speak. You understand most of what native speakers say and you can express your thoughts clearly and in detail. Of course, you still make mistakes (we all do!), but you’re ready to fine-tune your grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation to take your French to the next level.
In this group, we speak French all the time, you’ll:
🗣️ Practice expressing yourself with more nuance and ease
🔍 Explore idiomatic phrases, complex grammar, and subtle differences in meaning
🇫🇷 Learn to sound more natural and less like a textbook
🧠 Discuss engaging topics like French culture, society, current events, and more
If this sounds exciting—but also a bit too much for now—our intermediate class might be a better fit to build confidence before jumping in here.

No "Parlez-vous Français?"
Our small French group lessons in Edinburgh and Dundee are all about speaking real, everyday French in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. No grammar lectures, no boring drills—just fun, practical classes where you learn to talk in French the way real people speak. We meet in cosy cafés or online, and with a max of 6 students per class, there’s plenty of time to chat, laugh, and ask questions. You’ll join a lovely little community of people who are here to enjoy learning, support each other, and make real progress together.
A quick note
You might have taken an online test that says you’re B1 or even B2—but just a heads-up: those tests usually focus on grammar and vocabulary. They don’t always reflect **how well you can speak French in real life.** In our French classes, we focus on spoken French. That means real conversations, not just written exercises. So even if you’ve studied a lot, it’s totally normal to feel unsure when speaking—that’s what we’re here to help with. The best way to choose your level is to think about how confidently you can talk in French, not just what you’ve learned in a textbook.
Reviews from our students

I highly recommend these courses for anyone who wants to learn, practice, or gain confidence to speak French. Louise's lessons are engaging and fun, and always maintain a perfect balance between challenging and encouraging. I also love that the class sizes are small, so you can ask questions, practice pronunciation, and learn in a tailored way. Merci beaucoup, Louise!
Christine - Beginner Class

I love taking classes with Louise! I have completed 3 blocks now, they are great fun and interactive. The small groups are great for building confidence and encouraging authentic conversations. Louise is always thoughtful and responsive to the needs of the group which makes for a really inclusive, supportive class.
Rachel - Beginnner Class

I really enjoyed and benefitted from these online classes. Each class had only 5-6 students, and the content was well structured - a mixture of grammar, listening and speaking. There was also homework, which helps gives you an incentive ! I was preparing for a long stay in France and as well as the formal learning, there was also plenty of opportunity to ask about specific situations that would help me - and we all managed to have a laugh as well. And yes, the breadth of my french and my confidence in speaking it really did improve.

Let's answer all your questions
Happy to help with some of your main questions!
Should I trust an online test for my level?
Online level tests can be helpful—but they often focus on grammar and don’t reflect how confident you are speaking French. You might get a B1 or B2 result, but still struggle to hold a conversation. That’s totally normal.
In our French classes in Edinburgh, Dundee, and online, we focus on real-life spoken French. That means real conversations, not just written exercises. So I would say, trust your feelings first to pick the level with us.
The best way to choose your level is to think about how confidently you can talk in French, not just what you’ve learned in a textbook.
I've been on your waiting list for weeks and I still can't get a spot...
First of all, I want to say a big MERCI for your patience and interest in our French classes! I completely understand how frustrating it can be to wait for a spot. Our classes are often fully booked just hours after registration opens, which makes it tricky to accommodate everyone right away.
But don’t worry! We’re constantly working to add more classes, including with my wonderful teachers in Edinburgh and Dundee, so there will be more opportunities for you soon.
Please stay in touch, and I’ll do everything I can to get you into a class as soon as possible. Thanks again for your understanding, and I can’t wait to have you join us!
Can I change level if I didn't pick the right one?
No worries! We know it can be tricky to choose the right level sometimes. Our French group classes in Edinburgh and Dundee are usually very popular and fully booked, so it’s not always possible to switch to a different class. However, if we do have space in a class that would be a better fit for you, we’d be more than happy to help you make the change.
If you’re unsure which level is best for you, please feel free to reach out! I’m always here to guide you in finding the perfect class. Just email me at louise (at) bonjour-frenchclasses.com, and we can chat about what works best for you.
